What solar incentives are available in Indiana?
As a homeowner in Indiana, you have access to several different tax incentives that make solar panels more affordable. Solar incentives are available at both the federal and state levels to help you save thousands on your investment in solar energy.
Solar Calculator is here to help you take the next step in your transition to renewable energy. Below, we’ll discuss some of the different ways you can make solar more affordable.
Federal solar incentives
As part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, congress passed several clean energy provisions to reduce energy costs. Among those provisions was an extension and upgrade of the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC).
Federal Investment Tax Credit
The Federal ITC allows you to claim 30% of your total equipment and installation costs on your federal taxes. There is no minimum or maximum amount you can claim and it includes equipment, installation, permitting, and even battery storage.
The ITC will remain at 30% until December 31, 2032. After that it will be reduced to 26% until December 31, 2033, then to 22% the following year. The ITC is currently set to disappear in 2035 unless it is renewed.
Who is eligible for the Federal ITC?
Most homeowners will qualify for the Federal ITC, but not all. You must meet the following criteria to claim your 30% tax credit:
The Federal ITC will also cover the following expenses:
Homeowners save around $10,000 on average with the Federal ITC. But that number can be higher or lower depending on your total expenses.
How to claim the Federal ITC
Claiming your Federal ITC couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is fill out IRS form 5695 and submit it with your tax return. You can consult with a tax professional for more assistance.
Local solar incentives
Who’s eligible : Commercial, Industrial, Residential, Agricultural, Multifamily Residential
How to apply : Systems that generate energy using wind, hydropower, geothermal, and solar energy heating or cooling systems are exempt from property tax.* Systems using solar power devices—including solar thermal, photovoltaic (PV), and other solar energy—are exempt from property tax only if they were installed after December 31, 2011. For most eligible renewable energy systems, the assessed value of the system is exempt from property tax. One exception is solar energy heating or cooling systems which are exempt from property tax the amount equal to the out-of-pocket expenditures for the components and labor associated with the system. The property tax exemption is allowed every year that a qualifying system functions. The property tax exemption applies to both real property and mobile homes equipped with renewable energy systems and may only be claimed by property owners. Public utilities and other electricity retailers (excluding net metered customers) may not claim a property tax exemption for wind or solar power devices. Claiming the Property Tax Incentive Property owners that wish to claim this deduction must fill out Form 18865 and file it with the local county auditor. Questions about this incentive should be directed to the local auditor or assessor. Click here to find contact information for local officials. The Department of Local Government Finance outlines the incentive. Properties are still eligible if ownership changes. * Solar energy heating or cooling systems include solar energy systems used for domestic hot water and space heating, including heating of swimming pools, as well as industrial pre-heating.
Who’s eligible : State Government
How to apply : In June 2008, the Governor of Indiana issued an Executive Order establishing an energy efficient state buildings initiative. The order requires the Indiana Department of Administration (DOA) to develop design standards for all new state buildings that require a cost-effectiveness analysis of the building with a goal of achieving energy efficiency. These rules apply to all state agencies, departments, boards, offices, commissions, and public universities. The DOA has incorporated the requirements of the Executive Order into Indiana's standard instructions to designers for projects on state-owned buildings. Efficiency can be demonstrated through adherence to any of the following standards: A rating of Silver on the USGBC LEED rating system A two-globe rating on the Green Building Institute Green Globe rating system An EPA ENERGY STAR building rating An equivalent rating under a system accredited under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) The order also requires that renovations or repairs of existing buildings achieve the maximum efficiency level that is cost-effective based on an analysis of construction and operating costs over the life-cycle of the building. Renovations are likewise meant to be carried out with green building guidelines in mind. The design standards were last revised in June 2014.
Who’s eligible : Commercial
How to apply : Note: The Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) created the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Grant Program with a total budget of $5 billion. Each state was allocated a share of that total to help build out a national network of electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors (AFCs). With some limited exceptions, EV charging stations funded through the NEVI program should be spaced 50 miles apart and within one mile of the Interstate exit or highway. Indiana issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity for NEVI funding in August 2023; awardees for 39 sites were selected in Winter 2024 in this first round of funding. Additional details are available in the Indiana Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan.
Who’s eligible : Commercial, Industrial, Local Government, Nonprofit, Residential, Schools, State Government, Federal Government, Agricultural, Institutional
How to apply : In November 2005, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) approved rules governing the interconnection of distributed generation (DG). Indiana's interconnection rules require the state's investor-owned utilities to provide three levels of interconnection to customer-generators. Level 1: Applies to inverter-based systems with a maximum nameplate capacity of 10 kilowatts (kW). These systems must comply with IEEE 1547 and UL 1741 standards. There are no application fees or other fees for Level 1 interconnection review. Utilities may not impose additional requirements not specified in the IURC rules. There are specific limitations on a single system's potential impact and the aggregate potential impact on the grid under Level 1 interconnection. Level 2: Applies to systems with a maximum capacity of 2 megawatts (MW). These systems also must comply with IEEE 1547 and UL 1741 standards. For Level 2 interconnection, a utility may charge fees of up to $50, plus $1 per kW of the system's nameplate capacity, plus the cost of any minor modifications to the electric distribution system or additional review. Costs for engineering work done as part of any additional review may not exceed $100 per hour. There are specific limitations on a single system's potential impact and the aggregate potential impact on the grid under Level 2 interconnection. Level 3: Applies to systems that do not qualify for either Level 1 or Level 2 interconnection procedures. For Level 3 interconnection review, a utility may charge up to $100 plus $2 per kW of the system's nameplate capacity, as well as charges for actual time spent on any impact or facilities studies required by Indiana's rules. Costs for engineering work done as part of any impact or facilities study may not exceed $100 per hour. Utilities must use an interconnection application and interconnection agreement approved by the IURC. A mutual indemnification provision and reasonable time limits on application review are included in the rules. Customer-generators must obtain "only reasonable amounts of insurance against risks for which there is a likelihood of occurrence." Customers with net-metered systems must abide by the indemnification and insurance provisions specified in the state's net metering rules. Utilities may require customers to install an external disconnect switch at the customer's expense. Any disputes between customers and utilities will be settled according to the IURC's consumer-complaint rules. Utilities must use an IURC-approved interconnection agreement and interconnection form for each of the three levels of review. In addition, utilities must file an annual report on or before March 1 of each year. The report must specify the number, size and type of facilities interconnected as of December 31 of each year. Qualifying facilities (QFs) and net-metered systems also must comply with the applicable requirements of Indiana's DG interconnection standards.

How to apply : The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) allocates a portion of the Volkswagen (VW) Environmental Mitigation Trust funds for the replacement or repower of eligible on- and off-road vehicles and equipment. Eligible on-road vehicles and equipment include Class 4-8 trucks and Class 4-8 school, shuttle, and public transit buses. Eligible off-road vehicles and equipment include airport ground support equipment, ferries, forklifts, port cargo handling equipment, and freight-switcher locomotives. All vehicles and equipment must be certified or verified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the California Air Resources Board. Applicants proposing alternative fuel equipment or vehicle projects must identify the availability of fueling infrastructure. Additional terms and conditions apply. Information from AFDC. The 2024 Request for Proposals includes approximately $4.5 million in total funding, with individual awards in the range of $50,000 to $1 million.
Can you claim multiple tax incentives in Indiana?
Yes. You are allowed to claim multiple solar incentives for the same installation. However, you can only claim each incentive once. For more guidance on how to claim your solar tax incentives, talk to your installer or consult with a licensed tax professional before submitting your tax forms.

What is the best way to pay for solar?
Cash payments
Paying cash upfront is easily the simplest and most cost-effective route — if you can afford it. It lets you maximize your total savings by avoiding interest rates and other fees. You also don’t have to worry about making monthly payments. But the downside is you have to spend a lot of cash at once which isn’t an option for everyone.
Pros
Cons
Financing
Financing solar panels is probably the most common payment method. You get to own the system — as opposed to leasing — but you don’t have to spend all your cash at once. And although you do have to pay interest, you can secure a fairly low interest rate as long you have good credit.
Pros
Cons
Solar leases and PPA agreements
If purchasing solar equipment isn’t an option for you, a lease or a PPA may be worth exploring. This is where you are essentially “renting” the equipment for a fixed rate each month. And although you don’t have ownership of your system, there are other benefits such as maintenance and servicing agreements.
Pros
Cons
Going solar doesn’t have to break the bank
Going solar is becoming more affordable than ever. And thanks to a variety of solar incentives in Indiana, you can save thousands more on your investment.
